Glen Campbell was 75 when Ghost on the Canvas was recorded in 2011. The album sustained Glen’s musical genius even after his 50 years in the music business and 45 million records sold. Some believe that this last album may have been his finest, even though it came out right after the country great was diagnosed with an early stage of Alzheimer’s. Ghost on the Canvas was his farewell album.

I know a place between life and death for you and me
Let’s take hold on the threshold of eternity
And see the ghost on the canvas
People don’t see us ghost on the canvas
People don’t know when they’re looking at souls

In his 2011 interview with the The Village Voice, Campbell said that recording was still easy for him, even though things like names and even the last town he performed at were becoming elusive. At that time, he was still playing live, but had to use teleprompters to remember his lyrics. He attributed his lack of fear about his diagnosis to faith and love for his family. Three years after the interview, Campbell became a patient at an Alzheimer’s long-term care and treatment facility.

“Ghost on the Canvas” is about letting go and hoping for a better place. Heartfelt yet smooth, evocative of harmony and introspection, it’s a perfect selection for a memorial song.
